2024 Cola Estimate: 3.2% Raise for Vets, Social Security

2024 COLA Estimate: 3.2% Social Security, Disability, VA Raise

The Social Security Administration (SSA) announced the 2024 cost-of-living-adjustment (COLA) increase. The 3.2% 2024 COLA increase puts more money in the pockets of:

  • Retirees and survivors receiving monthly Social Security payments
  • Veterans and their eligible dependents getting monthly VA disability or pension payments
  • Beneficiaries of Supplemental Security Income (SSI) and Social Security disability insurance and their eligible dependents

The Social Security Act outlines how they calculate COLA. It ties the annual amount to the increase in the Consumer Price Index for Urban Wage Earners and Clerical Workers (which is determined by the Bureau of Labor Statistics). Though not as generous as in recent years, the 2024 COLA raise is higher than the average over the last 20 years, which was 2.6%.

Let’s look at what the new benefit increase means for you.

How the 2024 COLA Increase Affects Social Security

The 2024 COLA increase averages $59 every month for 66 million retirees and survivors. The amount you actually receive depends on multiple factors, such as:

  • Your Medicare Part B premium, which usually comes out of your Social Security payment. Next year’s Medicare Part B premium is set to go up $14 per month.
  • Tax withholding you authorized from your benefits, if applicable.

IMPORTANT: If you’re retiring early for health issues, don’t apply for Social Security benefits just yet. Instead, ask your doctor if you qualify for Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) benefits. Taking early retirement benefits can lower your regular Social Security payments for the rest of your life!
